“A little movie called Once gave me enough inspiration to last the rest of the year,” said Steven Spielberg.
Perhaps if Steven Spielberg recognizes your film, mass audience acceptance becomes a bit less important. Clay and I have been debating this very issue over at Meet Me In Montauk (Miami Blues post). Regardless, I encourage anyone who hasn't yet seen Once to do so. And those of you who have seen it, go ahead and see it again :-) The moment captured below comes early in the film, so it won't serve as a spoiler if you haven't gotten around to renting this gem yet (really - what are you waiting for?) It more forcefully and eloquently expresses why I love this film than I ever could, so just go ahead and watch it.

I love this song. When are you going to show me the movie?! Im sure I would enjoy it!
I remember hearing the song at the Oscars but it wasn't as powerful in that setting as watching them in the movie. The facial expressions and interaction really make the song more special. And what a beautiful song.
I haven't seen it and have been reluctant to add it to our queue because Carlos doesn't care for "musicals." Is this more of a regular dialogue driven movie with music in it (like August Rush), or are they breaking into song every couple of minutes? :-)
It's a drama about two people who happen to be musicians. They do a lot of singing, but always in the context of the story (at a recording studio, in a street performance, etc.). So it's not really a musical in the traditional sense.
I know I've "fought" with Amy over this film in the past, because she had it as the runaway best film of last year while I had it 10th or so, but it's a very special movie. Absolutely worth renting.
Thanks for the info. Worst case scenario, I will watch it by myself (like I did Sweeney Todd). He did enjoy August Rush, so he may be game.
On a side note, he didn't want to see Ratatouille with me (I have it now and am seeing it for the first time) because "it's a cartoon." This, despite the fact that he really liked Cars and we own The Incredibles.... Anyway, he caught a couple minutes of it yesterday as he was getting ready to go on a bike ride and asked if we could start it over from the beginning. :-) I'm only happy to oblige as I was only about 45 minutes into it and had many distractions along the way.
I watched this movie on a plane trip and found it to be sweet and mad the trip "fly" by.
I meant made the trip, I'm having trouble typing today.
In yesterday's NYTimes the theatre critic wrote a very long article about musical shows not translating well to movies i.e. Mama Mia (in his opinion of course) At the end of the article he mentioned "Once" as a perfect example of a "musical movie" Thought you would enjoy that Amy.
